UBS SwitzerlandNo matter where you work you will have to behave with a certain decorum. Every company or business has their certain dress code regulations whether it be wearing dress clothes in a business environment or a uniform for working maintenance. In most cases, dress code regulations are pretty standard and don’t require too much from the employee. But if you decide to go work for a bank in Zurich, you may find yourself complying with more than you had originally thought.

The aforementioned bank, known as UBS, has been trying to downplay the regulations which offered detailed instructions to employees that went as far as to restrict the color of their underwear and the length of their nose hairs. Reuters intercepted an internal memo for the Swiss bank where bank officials said “inaccuracies and misunderstandings” had occurred due to press coverage. This included headlines such as “Dress Test” and “No Sexiness in the City”.

According to the UBS memo, “The key element of the dress code is the requirement for staff to wear a dark suit, white shirt/blouse, red tie/scarf and black shoes. This requirement comes into effect for staff once renovated branches reopen.” The memo also said that the dress code was created in 2009 for reception staff, event attendants and chauffeurs but was being extended to customer-facing staff in Switzerland in order to help the bank present a consistent image.

This effort to “smarten up staff” is part of a much wider campaign to improve the public image of the country’s top bank, which was bailed out by the government after writing off more than 50 billion Swiss francs (or $52.2 billion) of toxic assets in the crisis. UBS is also developing a corporate identity in the form of making a standard layout and decor. This drive to develop a consistent corporate image is seen, by many, as the brainchild of Lukas Gaehwiler, CEO of UBS Switzerland.

The memo also states that “the dress code also contains a number of other general tips and hints.” These hints and tips run a nice 44 pages and also include advice to avoid eating garlic and onion as well as a discussion on the benefits of well-trimmed toenails. Other absurd instructions include: “When you are in corporate wear you must never wear the blouse or shirt too tight: no part of the bosom must be visible, as this would look vulgar.”
